WRITING

Written a screenplay that needs a polish?  Got an idea for a screenplay now what?  Already a great film maker and want to be a better story teller?  This Writer’s Workshop is designed to help you, wherever you are, get where you want to be.

Students in this class will develop skills concerning story, plot, theme, and character development by focusing on how to tell a story in visual terms.  We will also examine films from a professional screenwriters point of view.  We will look into the problems screenwriters face and the tools they have at their disposal to solve these problems.  In short, this class will familiarize you with the common language professionals use to communicate their ideas in the development and production of feature films - the language of cinematic storytelling.

Instructor - John Norwood

John Norwood graduated from the University of Southern California in 2007 with an MFA in Writing for Cinema-Television. Mr. Norwood learned from people who wrote everything from Top Gun, Saturday Night Live and Cheers. He has written feature scripts, sitcoms, one hour dramas, sketch comedy, music and just recently finished his first novel

TIME LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY

Time-lapse photography is a cinematography technique whereby the frequency at which film frames are captured (aka the frame rate) is much lower than that which will be used to play the sequence back. Put simply: We are manipulating time. Objects and events that would normally take several minutes, days, or even months can be viewed to completion in seconds having been sped up by factors of tens to millions.

The best way to get a greater feel for the power of time-lapse is to watch a few.
5 week class structure:
Week 1- Introduction, Instruction, Networking
Week 2- Application
Week 3- Critique, Review
Week 4- Edit
Week 5- Showcase

Suggested Equipment
DSLR Cameras
Tripod
Intervalometer (can be purchased from BH for $14)
Variable Neutral density filters (suggested but not required)

David Holloway will be one of team leaders for this class. We are currently looking for more leaders to facilitate the class and the class teams.

Email jadecastleproductions@gmail.com if interested.

Movement-Based Expressive Arts: Personal Embodiment

 Group movement lab
Movement-based dream group
Individual movement-based coaching

Explore your body’s symbolic story and deepen your kinesthetic and emotional intelligence through movement – and also drawing, writing, and voice.  Work creatively with the content of your life as you
-        -listen to the body’s wisdom
-        -discover the body’s language of metaphor
-        -pinpoint and play imaginatively with life themes
-        -retrieve and cultivate the creative impulse towards life and growth
-        -discover new responses
-        -create individual and group dances that have significance to you
-        -embody your sense of self.

Movement-based expressive arts brings unseen physical sensation, feeling, and mental image into seen action using the creative process.  The process becomes a psychological mirror.  The practice can serve personal growth and change, complement talk therapy, and/or support other artistic processes.

Appropriate for adults, female and male.
No previous experience in movement/dance, visual art, or writing is needed.
If you have physical challenges, you are welcome to modify activities to suit your abilities.

Instructor - Jennie Wakefield

Personal Embodiment Lab
Six week session
6:30 – 8:30 pm
$15 drop in, $75 pre-registered

Body Part Mythology
We often speak of personal themes in terms of body metaphors:
-       Standing on your own feet
-       Facing the truth
-       Carrying weight on your shoulders
-       Holding the key in your hand
-       Digesting what happened.

In this lab, explore your body’s symbolic story using natural movement and structured improvisation.  Participants create a holding environment for each other, respond aesthetically to others’ work, catalyze relationships, and provide community.

Movement-Based Dream Group
Six week session:
6:30 – 8:30 pm
$75

Use movement, drawing, and writing to bring consciousness to the images in your dreams.  Through the creative arts, relate to that part of you that gives you nightly dreams.  This is a closed group; please register in advance.  Limit 12.

Individual Coaching
by appointment
$60/hour

Sessions focus on your life themes.  You meet the substance of your story through the body, exploring its symbolic language through the movement itself.  The coach brings awareness to what is present in the movement, mirroring and giving resources.

Jade Castle Studios would love to offer other classes including but not limited to: general filmmaking, videography, visual arts, music, vocal, etc.

About the Instructor

Nikole Hunter-Weber was a Theater Major at Winthrop University.

After leaving Winthrop , Nikole began her journey into Film and Television acting; sifting through many different modeling and talent agencies, until aligning herself with John Casablanca's Modeling and Talent Agency in Charlotte, North Carolina . By early 1998 she became a recognized instructor for John Casablanca's (JC's) in their Acting and Modeling classes. As a popular figure at JC's, Nikole realized that teaching was indeed her niche within the Industry. Supervising Runway to Make-up, Speech and Acting techniques she taught over 1000 students from ages 11-65. After relocating to Australia in 2001, Nikole brought her knowledge and experience to the Mid North Coast. In 2002, Queen-O-Drama Productions was born; and went on to become a full-service Talent Agency in 2003. Having taught hundreds of students from Forster to Coffs Harbour, Nikole brought a new approach to the budding film and television industry in the area.

In addition to this, Nikole was able to work within the local area as part of community and charity groups, and has served on many Arts and Cultural committees while in Australia. She has also been able to help market and facilitate creative, educational and fun activities for a diverse range of people and businesses on the Mid North Coast and around the State of New South Wales. Coordinating events such as: Voice-Over workshops for “No Strings” Puppet Group (2003), developed a training course in On-Camera Techniques for Local and State Distance Education Teachers (2005); founded, organized and booked venues for “Question in a Pocket” Improvisation group for the (Port Macquarie) City of the Arts (2004); co-produced and instructed for a local Children’s Theatre group, “StageFright” (2005); coordinated businesses, music, lighting and models for the Port Central Spring Fashion Show (2007); planned and implemented 2 (two) courses and Finale performances at Bellingen’s Camp Creative (2005-2006); and was MC for the Comboyne Songwriter’s Festival (2003), The RSPCA’s Million Paws Walk (2008-2009) and the Wauchope RSL Melbourne Cup Luncheon (2009) Now, back in her hometown of Pickens, SC, Nikole is getting back to her Roots. By offering her Acting Courses and relocating Queen-O-Drama Productions, she hopes to provide her services to new and established Actors in the Region. However, Nikole certainly isn't one to hide behind the scenes, and will be doing her best to get herself "out there" and working as an Actor once again!

"Being a Young Filmmaker" by Guest Blogger/Artist Silas James Rowland

THE START
page1image1720

Ever since I was little I knew that story telling was going to be a big part of my life.

I used to love that hat *sigh*
Whether it be me making up a lie to get out of trouble, or playing with my action figures at eye level, developing the toys into characters with meaning to serve a mind sweetening plot for my eyes and heart.

And here I am 10 years later at age 17 - wanting to do the same thing, but with a cast, crew, and camera. I’ve already made the executive decision that filmmaking is what I am going to do for the rest of my life. I want to serve your eyes and enjoyment like I once did for myself.

Serving your Eyes, For Your Enjoyment

THE STRUGGLE

The film industry is a big game to jump into, especially at a young age. Besides getting a head start and certain privileges, it’s a tough endeavor. People are constantly under-estimating you and it’s hard to get people involved with your projects. With money being an issue for almost anyone, it gets in the way of plenty projects. Funding has always seemed to be a struggle for me, so that’s why I am starting to get involved with the business side of the industry. I’ve already produced multiple short films, with a $0 budget. But that also means a $0 rewarded.

At first, I thought, “Hey man, this is fun. Let me make a bunch of videos and use local talent.” I still want to continue to do that, but I want both them and me to be rewarded for what we do. It’s actually helped me to write and produce more quality content instead of those 8 minute improv videos I started doing three years back.

8 Minutes is a Long Time When You Have to Stand Like This in a Pink Ape Suit *whew!*

But what really gets me involved in the business is the fact that I am about to be graduating high school. Where and what am I to do after that? What if filmmaking doesn’t work for me? How will I make a living if while in school I dedicated all my time to only learning that trade? People say I am thinking too far ahead for such a young minded person, but in all honestly I don’t want to have to be supported by parents or family. I’ve learned a lot from previous struggles that will prepare me for the future ones. Until then, I will do my best to make those around me thrive, including my own self.

THE PATH, THE SUCCESS, AND THE STUDIO

I’ve worked hard to grasp the attention that I have now. I’ve worked hard to get in contact with the people that continue to help and befriend me. They inspire me each and every day to make better of myself, no matter how “mean” their comments may sound. They’re doing it in good interest.
The word “success” constantly comes up inside and outside of the industry. Truthfully, I think we identify our own success. Success for me would be making films permanently for pleasure and as a career. It doesn’t matter if I get millions of views (although I wouldn’t hate that... In fact I would love it). The only thing I want to do is be able to show what I can do. I need to prove that I am constantly growing and improving my content.

I think Ive outgrown my twin bunkbed :/
Our area is full of people who dedicate their time to film. Sure, that’s great and fun, but it’s not bringing in larger scale films or a community that is united or large enough to gather eyes. Crystal Tyler and I, with a few other filmmakers, have been discussing the topic of renting out a space for a co-op production studio. That is something that we are currently tackling so we can grow as a group and as a state who wants to take over the film industry. I’m not saying that within the first years we are going to be at the top, but it’s totally something worth investing into for my future, for their future, and others like us. Even your business could benefit from this studio. We plan to do it right, and make a quality, true studio.

**Crystal here- Just wanted to make sure anyone reading this knows that they can see my previous blog post for more info on the studio.  On that blog post is a link to DONATE *hint hint* :)

THE END

This isn’t the end. There never will be an ending. But this is the conclusion to a post that hopefully you could relate to. I am going to pour my heart and soul into making great films for you guys. To make great films with you guys. Forever encourage and inspire one another.

Sincerely, Silas James Rowland
